Marketing vs Publicity: What is right for your business?

February 21, 2019

An influencer tour is a great way to promote your product, service or event using social media, with a scheduled “tour” of different sites featuring your product in the week, fortnight or even month leading up to a selected date. Each day can focus on a different aspect of your product to spark interest with the influencer’s established audience.

For example, if your book comes out on 7th August, a seven day influencer tour might look like this:

1st August: First-look review released on Books, Cake & Coffee

2nd August: Signed copy giveaway from The Book Gal

3rd August: Interview with the author on Haunted Bookshelf

4th August: Review from The Gentle Reader

5th August: Exclusive extract on Rainbow Pages

6th August: AMA with the author on Left on Read

7th August: Publication day celebrated with prize draw bundle on London Book Bang

It’s a good idea to create a tour poster - a single image that can be shared on social media, listing all the stops on the tour and linking to your website or preorder page. This creates a unified message and ensures that every site is promoting each other.

Does money change hands?

No. If you have found the right match of your product and their audience, this should be a win-win situation for both parties. Your product gets shown to an already-curated audience likely to have an interest in it, the influencer gets high quality content that their audience will enjoy. Of course, reputable influencers will declare when they have received a free product but the caveat is usually along the lines of “in return for a fair and unbiased review”.

It’s sometimes a good idea to offer the influencer some freebies for their audience, either some samples, products, discount codes or entry into a draw to win a prize bundle.

What if they don’t like my product?

Highly unlikely (we’re sure your product is great!) but if an influencer doesn’t like your product, rather than delivering a scathing takedown, most are likely to simply decline to review. But some influencers do have a rep for delivering roasts (let’s be honest, we all enjoy reading them) so check their previous reviews before reaching out, to make sure that you are happy with the usual style of content.

The secret to a successful blog tour is finding the right influencers, then cultivating a mutually beneficial relationship that supports both of your interests. Attractive Nuisance can do this work for you, by getting in touch with a handpicked list of influencers perfect for your brand, and scheduling a bespoke tour to introduce a whole new audience to what you offer.
